Résumé

This research focuses on large-scale engineering projects with highly challenging contractor management: they typically farm our parts or phases to one or more subcontractors, and it is pivotal for the manager to ensure that each subcontractor delivers on time, on budget and within specifications. We start by reviewing contract theories from various fields including economics, organizational theory, sociology, and psychology. We then identify three different contract management mechanisms: 1) Management through trust; 2) Management before the contract is signed; and 3) Management during contract execution. This leads to the overarching question this research seeks to answer: How can the three contract management mechanisms be balanced to achieve optimal contract performance and subcontractor behaviour? In order to answer this question, we use a qualitative methodology that studies and compares two cases: a well-executed project versus one that was poorly executed. [incomplete]
