Résumé

The ability to achieve and demonstrate international development project success has become an increasingly important issue in the recent times of fiscal restraint and donor cutbacks. Current research on project success factors fails to adequately explain how projects contribute to the process of social development, thus making improvements to current development project practice difficult to assess. To address the literature gap, this research examined the internal and external conditions that enabled four international development projects to succeed. Drawing on current project success factor research and applying the principles of complex adaptive systems, this thesis presents the structural contributions, beneficiary contributions, project contributions, and project management contributions to project success. The research findings provide additional context for the conditions enabling the project success (who, why, and how) and propose new areas of focus for achieving development success. The research results provide more practical insight into the ways projects enable development success. Finally, the thesis proposes a "theory" that high levels of Multi-Stakeholder Commitment, Cooperation, Alignment, and Adaptation are necessary for projects to succeed. With this knowledge, project managers can more accurately target areas of improvement for future project practice.
