Résumé

Technical talent and competency are typically the main qualities that a project manager candidate is required to possess. While these characteristics are essential, they are not sufficient, as emotional intelligence (EI) is also important to the effectiveness, performance, and success of project managers in the workplace. Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive and understand emotions, and thus régulates and promotes intellectual growth. This research aims to identify specific components of emotional intelligence related to various indicators of project managers' self-appraisal of performance. This quantitative study was conducted using data gathered through an online survey of various project managers. While serveral tests are available to measure EI, for the purpose of this study, the Genos Emotional Intelligence Inventory (Genos EI) instrument was adopted, along with several questions aimed at measuring project managers' performance. The study participants were volunteers with project management experience, all of whom took the test online through Survey Monkey website. This study findings demonstrated that project managers that scored highly on Emotional Awareness of Others (EAO) and Emotional Self-Awareness (ESA) measures performed better than those with lower EAO and ESA levels did. In addition, positive significant relationship between managers' performance and Project Target and Earnings Performance was also established.
